Field Laborer – Solar Farm Geotechnical Investigation Projects / Ann Arbor, Michigan
We are seeking a hardworking and reliable Field Laborer to assist with solar farm geotechnical investigation projects across various locations. This role involves traveling out of state to project sites, where you will support geotechnical and site investigation teams in conducting soil testing, equipment setup, and material handling. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, performing physical labor, and following strict safety protocols.
Required QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Previous experience in construction, geotechnical, or solar farm projects is a plus.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs and work in physically demanding environments.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to travel out of state for extended periods.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred.
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented, safety-focused environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Site Preparation & Field Work:
- Assist in clearing and preparing project sites for testing and investigation.
- Dig test pits and assist with soil sample collection.
- Set up and dismantle work zones, safety barriers, and testing equipment.
- Conduct basic soil sampling and classification under supervision.
Equipment Operation & Material Handling:
- Load and unload trucks with equipment and materials before and after each project.
- Operate hand tools and power tools (shovels, drills, saws, etc.).
- Use hydraulic pumps, shackles, clamps, and steel beams as part of testing procedures.
- Operate heavy machinery, including backhoes, excavators and skid steers.
- Assist in setting up and operating geotechnical testing equipment.
- Carry and move heavy materials, including soil buckets, metal ropes, steel piles, and other steel components.
Travel & Logistics:
- Be available for frequent travel to out-of-state project sites with overnight stays (company covers travel expenses).
- Assist with loading and securing equipment for transport to remote locations.
- Work flexible hours, including extended shifts, based on project needs.
Safety & Compliance:
- Follow OSHA and company safety protocols at all times.
- Wear and maintain proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report hazards or unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Assist in traffic and equipment control in work areas.
General Site Work:
- Clearing and preparing the site for testing and investigation.
- Digging test pits or assisting with borehole drilling.
- Setting up and dismantling work areas, including safety barriers and equipment.
- Assisting with soil sampling and classification.
- Recording basic field data under supervision.
Equipment Handling & Operation:
- Operating hand tools (shovels, picks, post-hole diggers, augers, etc.).
- Using power tools, such as drills, saws, and compactors.
- Setting up and operating GPS and surveying equipment.
- Assisting in geotechnical testing procedures, such as soil tests and load tests.
Material Handling & Transport:
- Unloading and organizing testing equipment and supplies.
- Carrying and setting up pile for testing.
- Handling and moving materials like gravel, sand, concrete, and steel components.
Safety & Compliance:
- Following OSHA and site-specific safety regulations.
- Wearing and maintaining PPE (hard hat, gloves, boots, safety glasses, etc.).
- Assisting in traffic and equipment control within the work zone.
- Reporting hazards, incidents, and unsafe conditions to supervisors.
Support for Engineers & Technicians:
- Assisting engineers and technicians with field testing procedures.
- Holding or stabilizing equipment during measurements or sample collection.
- Marking test locations using flags, stakes, or spray paint.
