Overview

The City of Novi replaced its aging salt dome with a new, modern facility at the Department of Public Works (DPW) site to enhance winter operations and infrastructure resilience. G2 Consulting Group supported the project with geotechnical investigation and construction materials testing services from design through construction.

Challenges/Solutions:

The project utilized Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), a method more commonly applied in bridge engineering. This approach, requested by the structural engineer, allowed for refined safety factors tailored to specific load types and material behaviors—offering a more efficient and performance-based design compared to traditional Allowable Stress Design (ASD).

The site presented ideal soil conditions, which streamlined the geotechnical investigation and foundation recommendations. G2’s early involvement helped optimize the design and reduce the risk of construction delays.

G2 provided full-scope materials testing throughout construction, ensuring compliance with project specifications and maintaining quality control from start to finish.

Performance-Based DESIGN

G2 used LRFD to deliver a performance-based foundation solution with optimized safety factors and improved efficiency.
